You know who else is just fucking outstanding? John Legend. John Legend makes GET NAKED music. Sometimes, you just want to let all the inhibitions go and do what feels good. That’s when it’s time to turn on a little John Legend. He’s going to tell you to get naked, lie about it if necessary, and then throw your hands in the air. Indeed.
You know what else he does? Tells it like it is. Quote: “I realize that I just don’t love you. Not like I used to… Baby, when I used to love you, there’s nothing I wouldn’t do. I went through the fire for you, anything you asked me to. I can’t live this lie, and I can’t justify … not like I used to.” That’s what I’m talking about, John. Why don’t more people acknowledge that people grow in and out of each other? Taking advantage of love should be celebrated, not judged and dismissed. How is it possible that the honeymoon/infatuation stays forever? It doesn’t. Love sometimes hurts, but people work through it. Can’t we celebrate that flux and flow? Humanity is so mired down in the rules of engagement that we forget to just take it slow and enjoy what’s happening. Let go of that which doesn’t work. Come back to it later, if necessary, but people are just making it through – denying happiness.
Here’s a great quote from the movie The Kids Are Alright:
“marriage is hard... Just two people slogging through the shit, year after year, getting older, changing. It's a fucking marathon, okay? So, sometimes, you know, you're together for so long, that you just... You stop seeing the other person. You just see weird projections of your own junk. Instead of talking to each other, you go off the rails and act grubby and make stupid choices... You know if I read more Russian novels…” (Russian novels are fucking DEPRESSING!)
So why not Get Lifted when the time is right? Anyway, digression, but John Legend is a stud. His voice is honey. He lives in the sacred space where Sade and Marvin Gaye hang out. I love people who can tap into the libido just by singing some words. Lots of artists can do it occasionally: Eddie Vedder (of course), Adele, Amy Winehouse, Maxwell (okay, he should be up there with the masters, because just his voice makes me insane with hormones), Common, Kenna, Stevie Ray Vaughan – you see what I’m talking about. Voices like butter.
Music is magic (or else it’s power, which is equally possible). People who do music well tap in the collective unconscious and hit that spot we all have. The raw spot, the vulnerability, the power, the need that we all try to compartmentalize in our everyday lives. People who make great music make my life better, and they inspire me. An actor is just acting, but a singer who sells their song with soul and purpose changes everything. They get inside and mess with the internal functions of my brain. They remind me and inspire me, which I love.
After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music.
