It’s the" New Style" … 4 and 3 and 2 and 1 ….

New plan:  I’m going to buy a portable yurt (that might be redundant, as I think all yurts are portable), and I’m going to place it in my backyard.  In this yurt, I will place the following things:  my collection of books, as many pens and pencils as I can steal from work, several reams of paper, all my technology (there will be a very large extension cord connected to this yurt) for research and word processing needs, a handful of remarkably comfortable chairs/love sacs, and some breath mints.

In this space, I am planning to create the new style of school.  This school is going to be the most fucking outstanding school which exists in the Omaha Metro area, and possibly in the entire United States of America.

There will be no established curriculum, no bureaucratic bullshit, no fatty school lunches (food runs, instead), and a much shorter day – preferably in shifts, so that only about 5-10 of us are in the room at the same time.  So … for students, school with be about two hours a day, and I will be at students’ disposal from 10am to about 6 or 7pm.  We will read books on philosophy, economics, world religions, scientific phenomena, music, art, sociology, history, government, psychology, and (if we must) mathematics.  We will also listen to music, just because we can.  And we will kick around ideas about current events and interpersonal drama in an attempt to create a harmonious, academic environment where the free sharing of ideas is of the utmost importance.

And you know what?  My school will churn out smarter, more progressive, critical thinkers.  I’m ready.  Students are ready.  This current system is absolute bullshit; no one is learning anything that they don’t teach themselves!  Who is advocating for the students rather than for the school district?  I got into education to make a difference; how can I do that when all other teachers do is photocopy worksheets and show YouTube videos?  I’m ready for some FUNDAMENTAL change.  Let’s do it people.

Yes, there’s a little problem with funding, college acceptance, grading, and parental permission, but those are just minor setbacks.  We can rationalize this experiment as homeschooling!  It’s my home, people will be learning things, critically argumentative debate about important things will be happening … this is all better than what happens at traditional public schools, so I think we’ll be approved by the state in no time.

The wave of the future, baby.  Invest now.  It’s like early google or Berkshire Hathaway.  You stand to make a fortune, while benefitting those in society who need us the most.  All we need is a yurt – we can expand from there.

  1. Forget about investing, it makes me want to go into teaching! The million-dollar question is how do we make this change happen?
